As a two-time TIME 100 alumnus, this would be the third recognition by TIME within the past 6 years. And to share that recognition alongside my dear wiife, Awele, for our philanthropic efforts, is deeply humbling and makes it even more meaningful.
When Dr. Awele Elumelu and I embarked on this journey, the vision was simple: to back the aspirations, resilience, and determination of young African entrepreneurs.
Not because they needed saving, but because we understood that these entrepreneurs needed access to opportunity, capital, mentorship, and belief. We also strongly believed that their ideas could transform our continent.
Every entrepreneur we have met on this journey carries more than a business idea. They carry the hopes of families, communities, and future generations.
Time and again, they have shown us that when Africans are empowered, they do not just build businesses; they create jobs, restore dignity, and transform economies.
This recognition is therefore not just about us. It belongs to every young entrepreneur who chose courage over fear, every small business owner who kept going despite uncertainty, and every person working quietly behind the scenes to build a stronger Africa.
To our team at the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Heirs Holdings Group, partners, and everyone who has believed in this mission, we thank you.
And to the Tony Elumelu entrepreneurs across all 54 African countries: this honour is a reminder that the world is paying attention to what you are building.
Here’s to Africapitalism; an Africa propelled by enterprise, innovation, and shared prosperity.
